I don't want to sound corny, but it totally starts with a whisper. If you mean the "I hear God in my head" whisper. Because there are several different "whispers", multiple ways one might "hear" God. But the truest, bluest way to hear God is mind to mind. Inviting God to share space in your skull can be a life-changing thing that takes a little time and commitment. Not a ton, just a due effort; like it said in Where the Red Fern Grows, you've got to meet God halfway. If you start by formally stating inside your mind and, if you can, out loud, that you would like to hear the voice of God, it will be a strong start. Including a small mental clause "and NOT demons" would also be good. Because at first there can be demons, that answer quickly and tell you what you want to hear. You have to learn to ignore them until it's second nature and they just go away. So giving your mind over this one time, in the beginning, to "NO DEMONS" is a good precaution, and then think of them no more (because thinking of them is to call them). But onward. Announcing to God, to angels, to demons, and to yourself that you are ready to speak with the divine is a good way to keep a clear path, like you are publicly choosing "The Good Side" to all the spiritual world.
Meditation will help with all of this because to speak with Gods you must make space in your mind for them to reach you. You will need to be able to suspend your own thoughts and hang loose in the void, reaching out into your "now" and noticing the space and time around you. Looking at the sky, noticing the breeze, feeling the earth beneath your feet can all ground you enough to stop your thought process. It's fairly standard. You see, everyone walks around all day thinking in "Beta waves", meaning that their minds are sending and receiving information at a rate people have termed "Beta". Remember in school when "they" talked about how the mind emits waves? It's literal and true: people are walking around all the time on the "Beta wave". But going into a meditative state and pushing your mind into faster, more intense waves is to go into "Alpha", or to emit "Alpha waves". Clearing your mind and opening your full mental consciousness to The Now is where Alpha starts. Grounding yourself in the moment and letting go of your thoughts allows space to hear God in your mind. What being in Alpha really means is that you are accessing the spiritual plane, or engaging with the "Astral Plane", and speaking with the beings who live there and can watch over us. That's why there can be demons at first, because the spiritual plane is inhabited by creatures of both light and dark nature.

But mostly talking with God is as easy as stopping what you are thinking, breathing in, noticing all the beautiful light and flowers and sky and feeling vaguely lucky to be alive; and then just sort of remaining silent in your own mind, keeping your mind a tabla rasa for the Gods to use. Once you're there it's just a matter of choosing the right question and listening in. Ask a single question into the void you have created (and hopefully share with divine influence) and wait. If you can keep your mind quiet even after your question, you may hear the echoes of an answer, or you may hear full sentences, but the voice will at first sound as if it is your own, until you can recognize it as not your own mind's answer, but as the voice of God using your mind to communicate with you. To hear God, you must have focus, though, because, although the spirits are usually brief, it takes effort to empty your mind, pick a question, and then listen back into that emptiness for an answer that will sound like your own voice at first. It takes will power to hear a small whisper that sounds like your own thought and be able to decipher it as the word of God. But the more you do it, the more you'll notice that it is not your voice, it is independent of your mind and is actually messages from the divine. As you ask more questions and hold your mind open for the answers that fall in, the easier it is to "hear" the voice of God.
Then once you get to know your God and the Gods within this larger consciousness, the Universe is a beautiful, clever, snarky, and lively companion. If it wants to, the Universe will tell you not to smoke, where to go, and how to spend your money in no unclear terms. You will get better at listening for God's answers and be able to rely on this inner spirit-speaker; and they will never leave you because they already are everything, everywhere, forever...but inside of you. Less like prayer and more like stilted conversation, I like to think of it as having a tethered mind, always connected to "God" or the Universe or spirit friends or angels, or whatever. Once you can hear the divine mind, its voice can consistently direct your every move, if you allow it the space in your mind/life/decision process. This is what the great Prophets have done in the past and what great men and women around the world still do today. Speaking to spirits or just listening to the voice inside yourself, seeking guidance from within is a sure way to flow. :)
