Happy Equinox! Ok so I'm not sure if I've made it clear here that I am a fortune teller. It started with Tarot about 16 years ago and that lasted about 13 years (appropriately) and then I realized that not only is Tarot addictive, almost always negative, and likely of Freemason origin, it contains the "devil" and not God. Basically, the best card you can get in the Tarot is the Magician, which is just a dude who does magic (as Freemasons are wont to believe they are the highest power). So after over a decade of terrorizing myself, my friends and family, and random strangers on the street, I decided to give it up. And, with the exception of one time since, in which I was basically coerced into doing a reading for my sister and her friends, I have not looked back. And it's a good thing, too, because I am now convinced that Tarot picks up on the darkest timeline. It's "true", in the same way that a meteor could hit earth and annihilate all it's inhabitants is "true", but it's not fun, often not productive, and you can receive the same information in a much more constructive way.
What way is that, you ask? Why, the runes, of course! And what are the runes? They are symbols, first and foremost. They are letters in an alphabet, the Viking alphabet to be exact, known as the Elder Futhark. Basically, it's the precursor to the English alphabet and a near exact analogue. Each letter symbolizes some concept important to the ancient Vikings, most often based on nature. They consist entirely of lines, no curves, so as to be easier to carve into stuff. Because that is how you "read" them. You carve or burn them onto wood or stone (typically), each one on a separate piece, and then you put them all in a bag and pick them out and lay them down in a special order, called a spread. That's basically it.
I first became aware of the runes at the Renaissance Festival here in Georgia. The first rune I pulled was Tiwaz, or the warrior rune of the Sky God Tyr, which stands for truth and justice. The lady was like whaaaaat??? Because I was like a young, white girl pulling this beefy-ass rune about being a warrior. Little did she (or even I, really) know at the time that I was to become the crazy warrior witch I am today. That was my first encounter with the runes. I became acquainted with the runes in the summer of 2012 in St. Louis, Missouri after I had graduated college. I remembered the instance at the festival and found I was in need of these ancient symbols and so I began to research them. I remember I wrote out the runes and their meanings in my sketchbook at the time and that they all fit perfectly onto a single page when I was done. It was pretty magical. Since then I have found numerous uses, instances of use, and connections made because of the runes. As of now, I am not entirely sure how appropriate or positive they truly are (since some of the connections made have turned out to turn on me and I have noticed their appropriation in society/government/religion in negative ways) but I do believe they are better than Tarot, if by virtue of the fact that they DO contain a God rune and DO NOT have a "devil" rune. Like I said, they are based on nature and make a lot of sense (to me). Anywho, here they are:
This is a rune that literally means "God" or "the voice of God". As such it can be taken to mean insight, inspiration, breath, truth, wisdom, and good advice. It is God speaking. It can be used in all voice work, to protect against slander, and to clarify meaning. Its use is a good way to start chanting the other runes. Ansuz is essentially all forms of communication, be they spoken or written or rhymed; it is abstract thought concretely communicated. Ansuz is a good rune for leaders and the persuasive guidance they must posses. It implies not only the mouth and speaking, but listening and being open to the creation and reception of all sounds. It is a sign, the wind, intuition, dreams, synchronicity, and language itself. Ansuz implies all the creative power of words as well as the entirely destructive nature of them as well. It was said in Viking days, that you could literally "rhyme a man to death". Since God can create and destroy with a word, this juxtaposition is appropriate. Speak well, for you command the power of God with your tongue.
Reversed: you did not receive the answer, possibly because you asked the wrong question. Something was misunderstood, not made clear, or proper advice was not taken and a life lesson was not learned. Things might feel futile, wasteful, or untrue. People may be lying to you, manipulating you, or slandering you.
Ansuz's element is Air, its stones are Lapis, Emerald, and Onyx, and its plants are Lemon, the Ash tree, Lavender, and a mushroom called Fly Agaric.
B) Berkana
This rune literally means "Birch Goddess". It represents the Birch tree and all that that entails. The Birch tree is the first to grow new leaves in spring, it is flexible and strong and grows tenaciously even in unfavorable conditions. It was ancient tradition to plant a Birch tree on your land before building your home to bestow it with the Birch's properties. Therefore it is taken to mean a happy home, eager growth, birth, renewal, and everything to do with women, fertility, and motherhood (as it is an actual representation of breasts). There is an element of undertaking to the rune Berkana; as embarking on the path of the mother is a life long endeavor that requires constant nurturing, care, and compassion for success. It generally means a positive outcome, but sowing the seeds in the right conditions is imperative. A protected, safe, loving home environment is the best foundation for flourishing friends and family. This is a protective, family-oriented, nurturing rune of the divine feminine that helps with pregnancy, childbirth, and can even heal negative sexual experiences that have resulted in repression, anxiety, and/or fear. Berkana is the happy home and good health for women and children.
Reversed: family problems, an unhappy home, a woman or child is not well. Interpersonal problems, delays in a project, disharmony in general.
Berkana's element is Earth, its stone is Moonstone, its plants are the Birch tree, Lady's Mantle, Gardenia, and Daisy.
This is the rune of the "torch". As such, it is essentially fire, and fire brings light, or enlightenment. And so this is the rune of "the light in the darkness". It is the positive, creative, warmth that dispels the negative, destructive, darkness. It is the spark of any endeavor, the creative impetus, the dawning idea from the depths of mankind's collective unconscious. It is the flame of the forge that melds, transforms, and gives birth to art, tools, and new ideas. It is also the flame of passion: creative, romantic, and sexual. Kenaz brings light, clarity, and knowledge in the way that sex does: through revelation, regeneration, and inspiration. It is the rune of vision, surprising solutions, and fierce feelings.
Reversed: kenaz can also be the heat of fever, the forge burning out of control, or sexual passion unbridled and gone awry. Reversed, it can be darkness, endings, obscurity. Possibly a break up of some relationship, loss of station or support or standard of living, general despair. Negative influences, the bitter end of an illusion, creative burnout or blockage. Kenaz's advice: accept the change, be more creative, do not handle things an old way when a new way is better.
Kenaz's element is Fire, its stones are Bloodstone, Garnet, and Amethyst, and its plants are Willow, Pine, Spruce, Yolk Flower, Marigold, St. John's Wort, and Sandalwood.
D) Dagaz
Dagaz is dawn, sunrise, daylight. The moment of the day's inception. Before, there was darkness, cold, lack of growth and visibility, but then...breakthrough! The sun rises in one powerful, magical moment and light spills out onto the earth and into our consciousness and throughout our lives in a progression of warmth, growth, and vision. Dagaz is the penultimate rune of enlightenment as it is the moment of the sun's rising and the dispelling of the dark. As such, it is also the moment of the touching of day and night: Dagaz is the union of light and dark, and, ultimately, it represents this collision of opposites. Dagaz is simultaneously the coalescence of polar opposites and their ensuing equilibrium, as well as the triumph of the light over the dark. It is the marriage of balance and new beginnings, where enlightenment comes only after ignorance, and you are asked to let go of the past because those previous aspects of yourself no longer serve you. Dagaz is the rune of awakening, clarity, and transformation. It is purifying knowledge, duality, and the middle way. It is, literally, HOPE: the light at the end of the tunnel.
A fun thing to do is to draw Dagaz over your eyes with your finger in the air and "wear" it like glasses, just for a different, dynamic, dualistic view. But don't forget to "take them off" because it's a lot to live the revelation of Dagaz all the time.
Dagaz cannot be reversed as light is only ever positive and, once seen, cannot be unseen, nor forgotten.
Dagaz's element is Fire, its stones are Chalcedony, Tiger's Eye, and Chrysolite and its plants are the Oak, Chicory, Clary Sage, and Laurel.
E) Ehwaz
Ehwaz is very much a rune with
multiple meanings. Technically it means "horse" or "steed", as in Sleipnir,
Odin's eight legged horse; but it is so much more than that. It is more
about the relationship between horse and rider: the way boundaries of identity are blurred, and they fuse minds and
bodies and go forth together. To some, Ehwaz is about the idea of travel that a
horse conveys. To others it is more about the change that that travel implies. In another interpretation, Ehwaz is a rune not only of physical travel, but spiritual, mental, and/or emotional travel, and as such represents progress of all kinds. From my perspective, when I see Ehwaz in a reading, I see partnership and all
that that implies: loyalty, trust, faithfulness, compromise, harmony, unity, respect, teamwork, and tolerance. The idea of duality is present in this rune as well: it is associated with the divine twins and some say the actual form of the rune is two horses mirrored, head to head, staring at one another. Ehwaz essentially
heralds the loss of self and the embrace of the other through whom you come to know yourself again, as well as the cooperation of these two forces towards a common goal. Taking any road can cause trepidation, but less so when you travel with a supportive companion.
Reversed: relationship troubles, trouble traveling, or
changing things, or Ehwaz reversed can simply mean that you have become restless and
dissatisfied with a situation and are ready for a change.
Ehwaz's element is Earth, its stones
are Calcite and Sapphire, and its plants are the Aspen tree, Forsythia,
Coriander and Wormwood.
F) Fehu
This rune literally means “cattle”
as cattle were a measure of wealth in Norse culture. It is therefore the “moveable”
form of wealth, opposite Othala, or the "immoveable" wealth of land. Fehu is the
penultimate rune of abundance. It is material wealth and security in all forms
and, as cattle naturally breed, the idea that “money makes money” is inherent in
it. One of the natural properties of cattle is that they move and one of the inherent properties of Fehu, or any money, is that is must have "currency", or be moving as if in a "current". If Fehu, or money, stops, it stagnates in its idleness and becomes the dragon's hoard, corrupt and tainted by avarice. And so, there is a spiritual sense to this wealth, as in the idea that
wealth should not only be circulated, shared, and used to support the community, but that it
is not entirely physical. There is a wealth of the soul and mind implied in the
Norse concept of abundance through things like happiness, fulfillment, and a
good personal philosophy.
Reversed: money troubles, but
beyond just a deficiency of funds: the reckless pursuit of wealth, careless use
of wealth and/or possessions, a negative view of money or materiality in
general, carrying great wealth but being imbalanced in some way because of
this, waste, loss, failure, possessiveness, hoarding, parsimony, and fear of loss of wealth.
Fehu’s element is Fire, its
stones are Moss Agate and Fire Garnet, its plants are the Elder tree, Lily, and
Nettle and its scent is Myrrh. Fehu is also associated with Gold and Amber, which, when rubbed, creates an electrical charge.
G) Gebo
Gebo is the rune of “gifts”. It
is also the rune of “good marriage". Gebo seals relationships and promises that you want to make. The concept of moderate,
harmonious, and appropriate give and take is apparent here, as all
relationships are built on this notion. Both the giver and receiver must be open to obligation, reciprocation, and trust. Gebo is trust in your partner, as well as in the Universe to provide. Gebo asks you to reflect on what is being put into and taken out of a relationship, even within your relationship with yourself, and to make sure all parties are worthy and deserving. Gebo’s give and take is not limited to romance: friendships, business partnerships, and
even family relationships are part of Gebo’s purview; as are all bonds,
contracts, debts, and exchanges. It is a rune, ultimately, of consequence. Gebo’s form is that of an X and as such
represents all forms of connection, collusion, and collision of destinies, as
in the moment of meeting when the two separate lines cross. This is why Christmas is often shortened to Xmas, as it is a time of gift giving.
Reversed: gebo cannot be reversed
as all gifts and relationships are essentially permanent in the web of life.
Gebo’s element is Air, its stones
are Yellow Serpentine, Opal, and Amber, and its plants are Ivy, Rue Flower,
Lilac, and Wild Pansy.
H) Hagalaz
Hagalaz is first and foremost the
rune of hail. As such it represents radical upheaval, unpredictable power, and chaos,
albeit an intentional chaos. This rune is really an encounter of different
universes/dimensions/worldviews as is implied by its form: the left line being “connected”
to the right line. It is a collision, entirely subject to universal power, of the micro, human, physical world with the macro, divine, spiritual world: uncontrollable, unpredictable and unpreventable by men, but not without purpose.
While hail does imply destruction, pain, and a cessation of normal activity, it
is also a moment of revelation that widens our point of view-asking of us a
rigorous rethinking and confrontation of ourselves and/or others, allowing
the unknown room in our lives. Hagalaz sets right the balance, as violently as it needs to. Hail is essential a seed of ice and contains all the possibility and potential of a regular seed. This crisis time often forces you to change old patterns, bringing about positive change from a
correction of focus, as contact with the Gods can be scary and painful, but
ultimately helpful and revolutionary.
Hagalaz cannot be reversed.
Hagalaz’s element is Air, its
stones are Onyx, Striped Agate and Lapis, and its plants are the Yew tree,
Christmas Rose, Ferns, and Lily of the Valley, and its scents are Violet and
Coconut.
I) Isa
Isa is the rune of ice. As water
is the element of emotion, I tend to view Isa as “frozen emotion”. Within this
interpretation, there is a sense of emotional gridlock, stagnation, and decay, as
well as the frustration and other tangential emotions that arise from such
immobility. There are two approaches to this situation: one is to view this frozen
time as a time to cool down and reassess, perhaps because you were on the wrong
path to begin with and this is just a necessary realignment. The second
approach is that you are in some way not amenable to this fixedness and wish to
“melt the ice”. Both call for an examination of one’s emotions, which, here,
are implied to be “cold”. Fear is often associated with ice: it’s hard, cold, slippery and, in some cases, it just goes on and on and on, paralyzing us and
preventing us from changing. Ice is also a block of sorts, rigid, intolerant, restrictive, and represents a
barrier when juxtapose other runes. In some ways, it acts as a kind of “cap” to a
word with I at the end, a full stop and “wall” preventing other runes from
affecting the ones previous to it. Sometimes Isa simply means to wait or delay
something; sometimes it means to stop, look around/within, and realize where
you are; and sometimes it means you are mired in frozen, negative emotion and
at a spiritual standstill. In addition, Isa can mean you are too conforming or too stoic or there is some "icy" illusion before you. With all of these, introspection, silence, patience,
observation, and reflection are implied. A positive side of Isa is that it helps with self-control, it is strong, and it is beautiful; but do not let Isa/ice's beauty lull you into sleep, for that would be deadly indeed.
Isa cannot be reversed.
The element of Isa is Water, its
stones are clear Quartz Crystal and Cat’s Eye, and its plants are the Yew and
Alder trees, Henbane, Mandrake and Vervain.
Jera is the rune that means a "year". It is a rune about the cycles and patterns of time and how things are always changing and yet ever constant. Jera speaks to the fulfillment of labor past: you planted the seed, took care of the plant, and now it is time to reap your reward. It is a rune of karma wherein the past reverberates through to the present and on into the future. Since you reap what you sow, pay attention! Jera asks you to think in terms of your long term goals. It is a rune of slow, tempered movement where once one cycle ends, another begins; you are now where you once were, always have been, and will be again: at the beginning and the end. If things are rough, they will end; and if things are smooth, don't get complacent, just keep up the good work, because nothing remains as it was before. It is a rune of new beginnings, abundance, success, and prosperity: harvest time and planting time. It is also a rune of timing in general: good timing brings fortune and bad timing brings ruin. Be patient, wait for your golden moment, and remember that the more work you put in, the better the results. However, all things lead you to where you are supposed to be and prepared you for where you are now. In retrospect, you will realize that everything has come about as it should. Guard the knowledge of the past but do not be afraid to make way for new ideas. Life does not necessarily travel in a straight line, but often in a spiral: learn to appreciate the rhythms, cycles, and even the contrasts. The balance of opposites (yin and yang, dark and light, night and day) is also part of Jera. This is a good rune for agriculture, earth magic, and tempering more "zesty" runes. Also, know when to celebrate: like right now! It's the harvest! You planted the seed, did the work, now reap your reward!
Reversed: technically, Jera cannot be reversed, but if it is on its side or lies in opposition, be prepared for a reversal of fortune or loss of it all together. Timing may go awry and conflict emerges. Jera's advice: Stop procrastinating and make efforts for your future.
Jera's element is Earth, its stones are Luvulite, Emerald, and Carnelian and its plants are Oak, Rosemary, and Maple.
K) See Kenaz
L) Laguz
Laguz is the rune of water, specifically, the sea. As such, it represents the mysterious origin of life, the primordial beginning, our very inception. Therefore there is a sexuality to this rune, as well as creativity, memory, and magic. This is a rune of moon, emotion, dreams, femininity, and intuition. It is about the flowing, watery, nebulous side of life: the universal energies that we cannot see but that are constantly shifting, changing, and affecting things, just below the surface. Water has the power to shape and form destiny by giving opportunity as well as promoting the sometimes dangerous unknown. How we adapt to the unpredictable shapes us and our fortune. Water can be a gentle flow as well as a destructive tidal wave: nothing is stronger than water, nothing more motivating than sex, nothing more compelling than emotion. In some ways, this rune represents the most appropriate path, the perfect way forward, as flowing is a commanding, yet subtle, way of moving that powerfully opposes all adversaries. The idea of travel is implied in Laguz, as the Vikings got around most often on the sea. Since the sea is ruled by tides, there is a sense of homecoming to this rune. Also, purification, as both water, sex, and emotion can "cleanse" us: body, mind, and soul.
Reversed: sexual, emotional, intuitive troubles. Perhaps problems with women, especially neurotic ones. Confusion, misjudgment, lack of creativity. Temptation to take the easy route, do the wrong thing, or go the wrong way.
Laguz's element is Water, its stones are Citrine, Rose Quartz, and Pearl, and its plants are the Rowan tree, the Water Lily and Garlic; its scent is Ylang-Ylang.
Mannaz is the rune of Mankind. In its form, it is meant to evoke the mirroring nature of humans. We are a social species, with the need for each other built in. Therefore, this is a rune of social intelligence, society, and cooperation. Language, writing, and all forms of communication are its purview. People are its passion. Bonds, unity, even symbiosis are present within Mannaz. Intrapersonal views are also implied: Who are you? What image are you presenting to the world? What do you not like about yourself? Are you standing in your own way? Are you trying to live the life of another, or a life defined by others? Mannaz also reminds us that these explorations of the inner world mean nothing unless we bring them into our everyday lives and introduce them to others. This is a rune that reminds us to live authentically, genuinely, and with reference to the right things; only then can we be in harmony with ourselves and others. One of these references modern man has forgotten is the wisdom of past "men": our ancestors. Nowadays, we think that since these ancient people had not discovered the toaster, iPad, or elevator that the total sum of their aggregated knowledge and experience is somehow flawed. Humanity is drunk on its own power and instead of asking "Should we?" we ask only "Can we?". Reach into the past, feel the collective lives of those who have gone before, and experience those things which cannot be seen nor experienced through thought alone (nor through technology, especially). The good news is that Mannaz can help guide us toward the true path and away from the unhealthy fixation society as foisted upon us on possessions, positions, and "pleasure".
Reversed: isolation, loneliness, even ignominy. Pariah. And yet, this may be a good thing overall in that it gives us a chance to go within and reevaluate who we really are. Mannaz's advice: Be less selfish, consider other points of view, and/or work on your social skills. Reconsider your values and seek out your ancestors.
Mannaz's element is Air, its stones are Garnet and Amethyst, and its plants are Foxglove, Pimpernel, and Honeysuckle.
N) Nauthiz
Nauthiz is probably the most negative rune as it literally represents need, lack, and suffering. It is the rune of dark days, hardship, and deprivation. It is sometimes referred to as a literal hole, a sort of endless pit of need, where what you have is never enough and there is an ever-present desire for more. Nauthiz is desire unfulfilled: if you receive it in a reading you may feel like the Universe is laughing at you heartlessly and saying "You are starving". And yet, there is hope. This rune tangentially means Need-Fire, and represents your ability to get up from being put down and save yourself. It is misery, but also redemption. When you feel that things are not as they should be, that all your plans are going awry, and nothing is right, invite Nauthiz into your life. It will show you how to face your weaknesses, how to recover from any failure or hardship, and how to know the difference between desire and need. Often the problem is that your desires are getting more attention than your needs, be they basic needs like food and shelter or more abstract ones like personal fulfillment. The central idea of Nauthiz is that you must go through what you don't want, to know you don't want it, and also to know what you DO want, and then to understand that truly, necessity is the mother of invention. You can either ignore your needs or react to them creatively: choose wisely.
Reversed: I have a hard time telling if Nauthiz is reversed and so generally don't recognize if it is. However, if you can, then it means that you are on the wrong path, definitively, certainly, and without reservation: this way is not for you. Change paths immediately and never look back.
Nauthiz's element is Fire, its stone is Malachite, and its plants are Weeping Ash, Crocus, and Dandelion.
This is the rune of the homeland, inheritance, and "immovable wealth". It is literally the land your home is built on, as well as the abstract foundation of your life: your personal and collective possessions and history, such as your DNA, experience, values, traditions, language, and culture. It is what you get from your ancestors: their estate, legacy, and your very roots. This is the rune of family and the traits they gave you, or your genetic inheritance. It is the past symbolized as the land of your forbearers, which is indeed a veritable collection of your shared history. Othala can also be seen as the rune of possessions and ownership. It is the "seed" (Ingwaz) given roots, as can be seen in its form.
Reversed: family problems, loss (possibly of property), the need to let go of the old, outdated, and past (be it thought patterns or people), can be a sign to clear out your space and free yourself of all your "stuff".
Othala's element is Earth, its stone is Ruby, and its plants are Hawthorn, Elm, and Gorse.
Perthro is probably the most mysterious rune. In some ways, it is completely unknown. In some traditions, there is no sound or meaning associated with it. However, I have gleaned a meaning myself. To me, Perthro is the Lot Cup, or the cup that dice are rolled from. As such, it is essentially a symbolic vagina. And so it is associated with the mysteries of femininity, birth, inspiration. Since when you roll dice you don't exactly know what is going to happen, this rune is associated with fate, destiny, and chance in all its forms (including gambling and divination itself). Perthro is luck, second sight, mystical knowledge, seership, prophecy, divine messages, revelation, signs, and synchronicities.
Reversed: bad luck, losing a bet, a need to look to the past to learn a lesson needed to move on, missing the big picture, needing to reconnect to the divine, failing to understand one's larger role, misunderstanding one's fate, misinterpreting an oracle/sign, a hidden truth comes out and causes conflict, cautions against gambling or against needing to prove one is "luckier" than another, a need for temperance regarding fortune telling.
Perthro's element is Water, its stones are Meteorite, Aquamarine, and Gold Topaz, and its plants are Blackthorn, Beech, Daisy, Dandelion, and Monkshood.
Q) See Kenaz.
Raidho is a beautiful, dynamic, yet grounded rune of travels (both internal and external), adventure, and the cosmic order of life and the universe. It literally means "chariot" or "wheel" and refers to the idea of movement of all kinds. It is the dance of existence, the Shamanic ride, and the wheel of life with all its ups and downs and the idea that we all "have our go" on this enigmatic wheel. This is also a rune of one's spiritual search, of stabilizing conflicts, and of the integration of opposing forces in your personality. Raidho speaks of wholeness, connection to your higher self, being on the true path, receiving wise advice, and having primordial trust in the patterns and cycles of life. It is the seeker's rune, the wanderer's talisman, and a good symbol for all travel. Raidho is essentially a rune of purpose and transformation. There is a balance to this rune because a chariot, and indeed you, must be balanced in order to travel. On the road you also need self confidence, imagination, and just, sound judgement so as not to incur the wrath of your fellow travelers, take the wrong road, or fall wayward in any way. With Raidho, the more you travel, the more experience you gain and so the better quipped you are when things get rough. Just respect the road, tend your chariot, and guide it well.
Reversed: a sign of disruption of/inauspicious time for travel; be it plans thwarted, general chaos, delays, breakdowns, or just the stress along the way. Goals cannot be realized at this time. This is often due to hidden entanglements, static thought patterns, and/or a refusal to choose a path, all leading to immobility, stagnation, and stasis. The remedy for this is to accept the current state of affairs while also changing your perspective: you can either resist the flow of life or go with it and enjoy the ride, gaining valuable experience, even if it "doesn't all work out".
Raiho's element is Air, its stones are Chrysoprase and Turquoise, and its plants are the Elder tree, Snapdragons, Mugwart, Aloe, Oak, Basil, and Vetivert.
The Sun, life-force, the most significant energy source we are aware of. Specifically, Sowilo is the She-Sun, or the feminized sun. Traditionally, the sun, with its bright, active light, is considered masculine. But in the northern hemisphere, where its affects are gentler, it is considered a feminine energy: the source, one that gives life and makes things grow. It is energy, expansion, progress. Brightness, enlightenment, blessings. Growth, clarity, guidance. Sowilo is known as the "gladdener of hearts". Positivity, success, confidence. Happiness, fulfilment, joy. Warmth, sensuality, hope. Sowilo is the will to win and claim one's victory. It is life itself. Note: this is the lightning-shaped scar of Harry Potter, remnant of his Mother's energy, protection, and sacrifice, in keeping with the maternal light of Sowilo.
Reversed: sowilo is irreversible, but can be sideways or lie in opposition. In that case it usually means something is thwarting your light, as a cloud does the sun. It can also mean you're experiencing too much of a good thing, are overenthusiastic and freaking everyone out (as in mania), or are just expending yourself too much and are in danger of burning out.
Sowilo's element is Fire, it's stones Citrine, Diamond, and Ruby, and its plants are the Sunflower, Willow, Juniper, Oak, and Marigold.
First and foremost, Tiwaz is the rune of the sky god, Tyr. Secondly, it is the warrior rune, taken from its shape as spear or arrow. It is a good rune to put on weapons. Since the sky is made of air, the element of thought, when combined with the idea of battle, we get something like "intellectual combat", which makes sense because Tiwaz is the rune of fairness, the law, order, and conviction. It represents justice, equality, discipline, honor and all the elements of society organizing itself around rules of engagement so that we may coexist together. As the story goes, the god Tyr gave his right hand to bind Loki's first child, the wolf Fenrir, who threatened to overtake the world, or kill another god, or something. Tyr's sacrifice made him something of a priest among the gods and so this rune also symbolizes altruism, bravery, and hierarchy. Tyr's sacrifice made a change for the greater good and in the process he was deeply wounded, and so this rune can even be used in healing ritual. It represents pure victory, divine truth, and extreme loyalty. You can use it when you feel that a situation is unfair, if you cannot make decisions, if you need to be more assertive, in just legal matters, or if you need to face your fears by asking what is this fear doing to me? What message does it have for me? And the recognition that whatever need the fear represents, it can only be met by you. Since the rune is essentially phallic, it can even be used in love magic, calling in the divine masculine.
Reversed: you will lose whatever battle you are fighting, a lack of energy, being tired and weary. It can also represent a lack of creativity or even male "equipment malfunction". :(
Tiwaz's element is Air, its stones are Coral, Topaz, and Charorite, and its plants are the Oak, Torch Lily, Verbena, Thyme, Hazel, Aconite, and Sage.
Uruz is the rune of physical strength and prowess and literally means "Auroch", an ancient, extinct, bison-type animal that roamed the plains of prehistoric Europe which young men used to test their strength against. As such, this rune means endurance, perseverance, primal power, energy, focus, virility, courage, and self-determination. Because it is the rune of positive physicality it also stand for good health and grounding. It can help you break though old routines and master new challenges.
Reversed: uncontrolled power or strength, a lack of passion, stubbornness, rashness or imprudence, ignorance, bad judgement, lack of will or self-esteem, unwillingness to make use of opportunities, withdrawal, bad health, weakness, and, in the case of men, impotence.
Uruz's element is Earth, its stones are Carbuncles, Garnets, and Amber, and its plants are the Birch and Oak trees, Anemone, and Marsh Moss.
Wunjo is JOY. Pure, clear, %100 happiness, bliss, delight, and pleasure. Fulfillment, satisfaction, and success. It can be a gentle caress or rollicking ecstasy. It is the space where contradiction and conflict dissolve and everything is as it should be, all is right in the world, and harmony always and ultimately prevails. There is a communal element to this rune as well, as joy is best when shared. It is the kinship, belonging, and harmony of the community. Technically, Wunjo is the tribal flag under which we all gather in joyous union. It is a good rune to use when balancing personal achievement and communal concerns. It also helps balance body and mind. However, the fullest realization of this rune is closer to the combination of pleasure and pain, ecstasy and despair. Wunjo is the high before the hangover, the bliss of the orgasm and the slight feeling of loss after it is over, and the discovery of truth, be it good or ill. On the opposite end, it is also the restoration after the breakdown. But most of all, Wunjo is peaceful acceptance: accepting what life has offered, (while never being misled) as well as accepting the self. It is the happy ending and a reminder to the KEEP THE JOY.
Reversed: depression, being lost or simply not having found the path to happiness, a bad mood, conflict and quarrels, disappointment and dissatisfaction. Wunjo's advice: do not make decisions now; remember true happiness comes from within, not without; problems pass; and a positive attitude helps all around.
Wunjo's element is Air, its stones are Gold, Ruby, and Diamond, and its plants are Linden, Larkspur, and Flax.
Y) See Jera.
Z) Algiz
Algiz is the rune of protection. It is the rune of Elk antlers, which act as antenna attuned to threats, as well as elements of defense. Algiz is also the outstretched palm, which is also defensive. It is a rune of self-awareness, an understanding of risk and danger, and the development of the skills to protect yourself in life. It is a rune of the stability, safety, and security that arises from a strong connection to the Gods, yourself, and the land. It is associated with the Valkyries and Yggdrasil, the world tree. Algiz mirrors Yggdrasil's link between the Gods and humans, creating a dialogue with the higher planes through your inner senses. If done correctly, this is a very "safe" thing, a "protected" thing, that can be relied upon to give foundational advice. Algiz aids in channeling this divine guidance and assures you that listening to your intuition is one of the "safest" things you can do. When you have this strong connection to yourself, the land, and the Gods, it is harder for others to manipulate or take advantage of you. These relationships between you and yourself, the divine, and the earth create a sacred barrier between you and those who would harm you. Algiz is the safety of empyrean guidance, trusting oneself, and living in harmony with the land so that it works for you, instead of against you.
Reversed: vulnerability, illness, boundaries crossed, someone being "out of line", bad advice, harm. Algiz's advice: do not harm others so that they will not harm you, be cautious and prepare for everything, and gather advice and opinions about everyone's motive and character before you engage with them.
Algiz's element is Air, its stones are Agate, Amethyst, and Slate, and its plants are the Elder tree, Marigold, and Angelica.
Runes that don't super fit our alphabet:
The literal meaning of Thurisaz is "the thorn". This is a complex rune, as thorns protect their flowers, but also provide a barrier to the beauty of that flower. Generally, Thurisaz represents unruly power, chaotic strength, destruction and disaster, anger and aggression, conflict and bad news (such as discovering an unsightly secret). Since it is phallic in form, there is an element of sexual violence attached to this rune and it can indicate such things as rape. However, it can also defend against this (as a thorn protects its flower) and draw out reserves of strength you were unaware you even had. Since the thorn is a passive threat, it often represents things in the unconscious realm: hidden urges, vital forces, and the "inner defense" against what triggers aggression in oneself. But beware! Do not run from the obstacles and tests of Thurisaz, though they may seem insurmountable, because overcoming these difficulties helps you pursue your goals and realize your dreams at other times, in other ways, and across the board. We must master Thurisaz to gain its powerful defenses, righteous resistance, and wild power. If paired with Algiz, it creates a powerful protection spell.
Reversed: a clear path forward for a new beginning, an excess of self-confidence, stubbornness, vulnerability, naivety. Thurisaz's advice: Stay open, think it through, and be honest with everyone, including yourself.
Thurisaz's element is Fire, its stones are Beryl and Sapphire, and its plants are the Oak, Atlas Flower, and Moon Violet.
N, G, Ing) Ingwaz
Ingwaz has two accepted forms, as seen above. It is a fertility rune, specifically the male seed, which is a more pronounced notion in the simpler form of the rune. It is named after the Earth, fertility god Ing, and represents the fire dormant in all humans. Ingwaz is new beginnings, prosperity, creation, regeneration, evolution, and spiritual fulfilment. It is the intent, energy, and resources of opposites coming together in sexual union. As such, it also represents concepts, ideas, and thoughts as "seeds" that need to be cultivated, tended, and watered so that they may manifest. Ingwaz is a rune of perpetual development, however, starting with the physical growth of a babe, the emotional growth of a child, the mental growth of an adolescent, and the spiritual growth of an adult. Each phase is intrinsic to, interwoven with, and creates the foundation for the next step. This process is a subjective, inner one and as such, Ingwaz often represents the "quiet" hero, unnoticed and unsung, diligently doing their duty. It is a rune of complimentary forces coming together, to create new life, for the purpose of propagating what is best in the species and each other.
Reversed: ingwaz cannot be reversed and is almost always positive, speaking of all standing well, everything in its right place, and good feelings all around.
Ingwaz's element is both Earth and Water, its stones are Granite, Jasper, Carnelian, Peridot, and Citrine and its plants are all fruit trees, specifically the Apple, Gentian and Bluebell flowers, and Ferns.
Eihwaz is the Yew tree, also known as Yggdrasil, the tree of life, which connects the worlds of the living, the dead, and the Gods. It is a strong, yet flexible tree, that the ancient Nords made their bows of. It is also a very poisonous tree, and yet it can live over 3,000 years, giving it the symbolism of both life and death. Because Eihwaz penetrates multiple dimensions, it gives querents visions, clairvoyance, and enlightenment. It straddles light and dark, and as such, it often brings things hidden in the shadow to the light, including secrets of all kinds, as well as buried fears and unknown blocks. This rune can help you face your inner demons, show you your true destiny/journey/path, and it can indicate your hidden, idle talents that can be used more effectively. It is the consummate ally in all inner journeys to forge new paths and find new direction as it represents a turning point, transformation, and change of every kind. Eihwaz is a rune of testing, endurance, and the will to survive as you let go of your burdens, separate from all negativity, and strip away all that is weak and diseased. While it wards off negativity as you master all trials, you must be willing to make these sacrifices in order to grow and achieve your fresh start, your carefree future. Eihwaz is also a rune that reminds you to use your energy wisely: you cannot pour from an empty vessel, so maintain your energy levels. You must remain flexible and resilient, like the Yew tree itself, to stay protected in difficult times. Eihwaz also reminds you that both learning and not learning bring death, just different kinds. Learning brings ego/spiritual death wherein you change your mind, opinions, and worldview for the better; while not learning means you simply die the death of ignorance and non-realization. There is always more to learn, so never think you know it all, and always strive for more.
Eihwaz cannot be reversed.
Eihwaz's element is Air, its stones are Turquoise, Hawk's Eye, and Ruby, and its plants are Mandrake, Lilac, Ash, Raspberry, and the Yew tree.
